Anyone in the Bay Area fascinated by headline trials has an extraordinary treat in store for them on October 9, 2013, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at the Odell Johnson Performing Arts Center located at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street in Oakland. The Alameda County Democratic Lawyers Club and the Peralta Community College District are co-sponsoring an historic debate among legal experts concerning “The Trial of the Century.”
The debate will focus on the 1994-95 O. J. Simpson murder trial, the 1972 Angela Davis conspiracy trial, and the 1968 death penalty trial of Black Panther Party co-founder Huey Newton. Various scholars have named all three trials as “The Trial of the Century,” and the debate at Laney College will highlight what makes these standout trials of the 20th Century.
The distinguished debate panelists include moderator James Brosnahan, who is ranked among the top 30 U.S. trial lawyers; Oakland civil rights attorney John Burris, who was a TV commentator for the O.J. Simpson trial; Howard Moore, a co-leader of Angela Davis’s defense team; and Doron Weinberg, a 2011 winner of best California criminal defense attorney and former partner of Newton lawyer, Fay Stender. The panel will also ask the audience to consider four other famous trials the media once called “The Trial of the Century” and attendees will vote for their choice. The winner will be announced at the public reception following the debate.
Other sponsors include the Alameda County Democratic Lawyers Club, Women Lawyers of Alameda County and the Equal Justice Society. The debate is a fund-raiser for Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth, headed by Angela Davis’s sister, Fania Davis (http://www.rjoyoakland.org) and the nonprofit documentary project on the Huey Newton trial based on the award-winning 2012 book by retired Oakland judge Lise Pearlman, “The Sky’s The Limit: People v. Newton, The Real Trial of the 20th Century?” (http://filmmakerscollab.org/films/the-real-trial-of-the-century/).
Tickets for the debate are $35 general admission and sponsorships start at $150 and up. For tickets, visit http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/451175 or call (800) 838-3006.
